UC Pulls Away from St. Catharine in 6-3 Victory

Saint Catharine, Ky. -- The Union College baseball team scored a run in the eighth, and two in the ninth to pull away from St. Catharine’s (Ky.) in a 6-3 win on the road Tuesday.

With the win, Union moved to 6-10 on the season, and snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory. St. Catharine fell to 14-9 with the loss.

In the second inning, Union got on the board first, taking an early 1-0 lead on a Nelson Price RBI single that scored Donnie Popham, who led the inning off with a single. St. Catharine, however, quickly knotted the game up at a run apiece in the third inning, scoring a run off of UC starter Lee Malone on an RBI single.

In the fifth, the Bulldogs took the lead back at 3-1, scoring two runs in the frame. Cory Perreault led the inning off with a single, then after stealing second, scored on an RBI single by Joe Engle. Two batters later, Popham knocked home Engle on an RBI single, giving UC a two-run edge.

But, once again, St. Catharine battled back, scoring lone runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game up at three after seven innings.

In the eighth, Arthur Dockery led off with an infield, bunt single, then was advanced over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tim DeVito. Dockery then moved up to third on a wild pitch with Engle at the plate. Engle proceeded to knock home Dockery on an RBI sacrifice fly to center, giving the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead entering the ninth.

In the ninth, UC put St. Catharine away when Price hit a two-run homer over right field fence. The home run, which was the first for Price in his career, gave the Bulldogs a three-run cushion going into the bottom half of the ninth.

In the bottom of the frame, St. Catharine did hit a double off of reliever DeVito, but stranded the runner on base, as the Bulldogs pulled out the road win.

Overall, Price led the Bulldogs at the dish, going 4-for-5 with a home run, three RBI, and a run scored. Tyler Brake went 3-for-3 with two walks, while Engle ended the game going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

On the mound, reliever Drew Hillard (1-1) earned his first win of the season after tossing an inning and a third scorless, striking out two. DeVito also earned his first save of the year in the victory, throwing a full inning of scoreless ball. Matt Wagner (1-3) took the loss for St. Catharine.

Union returns to action tomorrow when they host University of the Cumberlands at Jerry Carey Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
