KINGSPORT, Tenn. -- The Union College softball team saw its 2012 season come to a close on Thursday, as Tennessee Wesleyan eliminated the Lady Bulldogs from the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament with a 3-1 victory at Domtar Park.
With the defeat, Union ends the season with a 27-17 overall record, while TWC went to 22-21 with the victory.
In the game, TWC got off on the right foot against UC starter Katie Perkins (Owensboro, Ky.), scoring a run in the top of the first after lead-off batter Brooke Ward tripled, and was knocked home on a fielders choice to make it a 1-0 game.
In a pitchers duel, Union finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth, as Abby Sears (London, Ky.) knocked home Gina Loflin (Salisbury, N.C.) on an RBI single to knot things up at one-all after four. TWC, however, came right back in the top half of the fifth to take the lead, scoring a lone run to go up 2-1.
In the sixth, Union couldn't cash in on what turned out to be their final chance in the game, as they failed to capitalize on lead-off hits by Sears and Loflin, stranding two on base. In the top of the seventh, TWC scored a run to go up two, then retired Union in order in the bottom of the seventh to move on in the tournament.
Overall, Sears went 2-for-3 with an RBI in her final game in a UC uniform, while Ashley Wojnowski (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) was also 2-for-3, as well. In the circle, Perkins (7-5) took the hard luck loss, giving up just two runs on three hits in a little over of four innings work.
