UK baseball returns to No. 1 national ranking

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- After a series win over top-ranked LSU during the weekend, Kentucky has moved up to No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball, No. 2 in Baseball America and No. 3 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches’ polls, released on Monday afternoon.

Kentucky (35-6, 13-5 Southeastern Conference) checks in as the No. 1 ranked team for the third week of 2012, after its series win over LSU, with the two teams entering the series ranked No. 1 and No. 2 and sitting tied atop the SEC standings. UK was ranked No. 2 by Collegiate Baseball last week, No. 3 by Baseball America and No. 4 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches’ top-25.

UK leads the SEC after six of 10 conference weekends, with its series win over LSU its first over a No. 1 ranked team in program history. The Wildcats stopped LSU’s eight-game winning streak with the series win, with the series win UK’s sixth consecutive to open the league play. UK is off to the best start to a season and conference play in program history, leading the nation in wins and winning percentage.

The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday, traveling to No. 23 Louisville for UK’s 14th ranked opponent in its last 16 games. The game will start at 6:00 p.m. ET at Jim Patterson Stadium, with UK slated to start freshman southpaw Sam Mahar (3-1, 1.71 ERA) vs. Louisville sophomore right-hander Chad Green (2-0, 1.99 ERA).
