MOREHEAD, Ky (WYMT) - Seth Millar and Marquis Terrell rushed for 108 and 100 yards, respectively to help the University of Pikeville top Morehead State 13-10 on the road at Jayne Stadium on Thursday.
The Bears took down the NCAA Div. I FCS school with more than just great offense. UPIKE also showed up on defense, limiting a unit that averaged nearly 40 points a game a season ago to just 10 on its home field.
Morehead (0-1) finished with 378 yards of total offense, compared to 326 for the Bears, but three Eagle turnovers were what helped UPIKE (1-0) earn the season-opening win.
With the backs running wild, quarterback Reese Browning tossed in a solid night as well. The junior went 16-for-24 passing for 131 yards, including a 28-yard fourth-quarter heave down the sideline to Niquay Mack to set up the go-ahead touchdown.
Trailing 10-7 with fewer than three minutes to play, Millar followed Mack’s huge catch with a 23-yard touchdown run through the Eagle defense to put UPIKE up for good at 13-10 after Ryan Wilson’s extra point was blocked.
Morehead State had two more drives in the last two minutes. On the first quarterback Logan Johnson threw three incompletions before a punt, followed by a bad snap at the 50 with two seconds left that was downed in the backfield to end the game on the second.
Johnson completed 33-of-53 passes for 271 yards with two interceptions, while Cyrus Strahm led the rushers with 76 yards on eight carries. UPIKE’s Dontevius Daniel and Quanthony Fletcher came down with the two picks.
Defensively UPIKE was led by Jade Haddix and Chris Watson with eight tackles each. Watson also added a sack and made one of the biggest plays of the game blocking a field goal just before halftime to keep the game scoreless at the break.
After 30 minutes defense, the Bears put the first points on the board on the first drive of the second half. Millar had rushes of 18 and 15 yards on the drive before Terrell finished it off with an 11-yard scamper to make it 7-0.
At the end of the third quarter, Morehead State used a 12 play, 54-yard drive to get a 21-yard field goal from Luke Boyd to get within four. UPIKE couldn’t get a first down on its next drive and the Eagles capitalized, using Rob Harden runs of 11 and 12 yards to score its first touchdown to go up 10-7.
With just over five minutes to play is when UPIKE went on its winning drive. Faced with a third and three on his own 49 yard line, Browning completed the 28-yard strike to Mack that led to Millar’s winning run to the end zone.
UPIKE returns to action at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday, hosting Bluefield (Va.) in the Mid-South Conference East Division Opener at Hillard Howard Field.
