DAYTON, Ohio – A University of Pikeville bowler finished third in the 2012 Junior Masters Event over the weekend.
Derek Perkins, of Oklahoma City, Okla., worked his way through the tournament format to finish third in the tournament, held May 12-13, 2012, at Capri Lanes.
The tournament started with two squads. Perkins was in the B squad and had to make the top 2/3 of the boys field to advance to the evening block. He qualified 53rd with a 1127 score for 6 games. The cut was 63 bowlers.
In the evening squad Perkins posted games of 225, 216, 191, 231, 224, and 233 for a 1320 total, good enough to place him 12th and qualify him for Sunday's top 16 bracket.
In his first match on Sunday, he was paired up against fifth seed Trent Mitchell, of Cleveland, Ohio. Perkins posted scores of 258 and 202, for a 460, total good enough for him to advance to the top eight. His next match was against Kyle Condrick, of Austintown, Ohio. Perkins posted scores of 232 and 182, for a 414 total. This advanced Perkins to the semifinals.
In the semis, Perkins bowled against eventual tournament champion Kyle Anderson. He posted scores of 209 and 227; however Anderson posted scores of 255 and 254, for a 509 total and eliminated Perkins.
Perkins earned a $500 college scholarship for his performance in the event.
Perkins averaged 208.7 for 18 games he bowled in the event. He posted his most impressive stats of the season. He converted 43 of 45 single pins a 93.3 percent fill rate. Perkins also had a strike percentage of 53.6.
More than 90 bowlers participated in the event representing eight states, including current members of Junior Team USA.
