PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville football schedule has undergone a couple of adjustments, one involving the first game and the other the last.
The scheduled season opener will now be an exhibition game after Point (Ga.) University declared itself a club team this season. The game will still take place on Thursday, August 25 at 7 p.m. at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex, but will not count in the season standings.
Point, formerly known as Atlanta Christian College, will field its first football program this fall. As a result, it will play as a club. In the 2000 season, Pikeville’s first season of football, the Bears went 7-1 as a club team.
Additionally, the season finale against Kentucky Christian College will be a home game, giving the Bears six home dates on its 10-game regular-season schedule.
Last season the Bears agreed to host the Knights, who were still working on their on-campus stadium. Kentucky Christian, a member of the Mid-South Conference East Division in football, will make the short trip to Hillard Howard Field to keep the schedule matrix in its proper form.
UPIKE will now play its first game under legendary coach Dudley Hilton on Saturday night, Sept. 3 when it hosts Southern Virginia University. That game – as well as the Kentucky Wesleyan game the following Saturday – will kick off at 6 p.m.
After a road game at Shorter (Ga.) University on Sept. 17, the Bears will return home on Sept. 24 to play Faulkner University at 1:30 p.m.
All four games in October and both November contests will be against MSC East Division competition.
