PIKEVILLE, Ky. – For the second time this season, winter weather conditions have forced the postponement of a Mid-South Conference basketball doubleheader for the University of Pikeville.
Thursday night’s games against Cumberlands (Ky.) have been rescheduled for this Monday at the East Ky. Expo Center.
The normal conference game times have also been changed as the men will play first at 5 p.m. ET, followed by the women’s game at 7 p.m.
A winter storm rolled through Eastern Kentucky Wednesday night and into Thursday morning that produced several inches of heavy, wet snow. Classes at Pikeville were also canceled on Thursday due to the hazardous road conditions.
UPIKE’s other postponement this season due to weather came against Shawnee State (Ohio) on Jan. 25. The Bears will play against before Monday, hosting Georgetown (Ky.) at 2 and 4 p.m. ET, with the women playing first, on Saturday.
The Bear women (11-13, 5-7 MSC) have won three of their last four games and look at all six of their remaining MSC games as vital to improving their chances at advancing to postseason play. In the current league standings, Pikeville is tied for fifth place and the top eight teams qualify for the MSC Tournament.
On the men’s side, UPIKE (21-2) has won seven straight games and is ranked No. 2 in the latest NAIA top-25 poll. At 11-1 in MSC play, Pikeville has a two-game lead on first place but of their six remaining games, three are against teams either ranked or receiving votes in the latest poll.
