UPike men's basketball opens with Athletes in Action exhibition on Thursday

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Interest is high in University of Pikeville men’s basketball with 11 new faces on the roster. Fans can check out the new-look Bears for the first time at 7:30 p.m. ET on Thursday in exhibition play against Athletes In Action at the East Ky. Exposition Center.

The AIA roster consists of former NCAA Div. I, II and NAIA players, including 6-10 Paul Campbell from Hawaii and guard Steve Thomas from IUPUI. The exhibition travel team is undefeated through four games, including an 80-48 win over Union (Ky.) and 90-51 win against Hiawassee College.

Following Thursday night’s exhibition, UPIKE’s regular-season home opener is scheduled for Oct. 30 against Tennessee Wesleyan. On Tuesday the Bears were picked to finish as the runner-up in the Mid-South Conference by the league’s coaches.

“We look at those kinds of things, but it’s not really the ultimate goal,” said UPIKE head coach Kelly Wells. “Being first at the end of the year is what we’re concerned about. It’s a nice honor for our guys, but we don’t take a lot of stake in it and try to get better every day.”
