UPike softball comes up short at Cumberlands in 6-4, 5-4 losses

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – A comeback in game one came up short and a big inning proved the difference in game two as the University of Pikeville softball team lost both games of a Mid-South Conference doubleheader against Cumberlands (Ky.) 6-4 and 5-4 on Wednesday at the Briar Creek Softball Field.

UPIKE (13-26, 9-21 MSC) trailed 5-0 heading into the sixth innings of the opener before scoring two runs in both the sixth and fifth innings. The comeback effort came up just short as the Patriots added an insurance run in the sixth inning to lock up the win.

In game two it was Pikeville with a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning before Cumberlands scored four runs before an out could be recorded which ended up being all it needed for the 5-4 win. UPIKE’s Sydney Morris took both tough losses in the circle to drop to 9-14 on the season.

For the Patriots (16-27, 13-17 MSC), it was Nichol Chesley (11-13) winning game one and Kenly Lambert (2-4) earning the game-two win after 6-1/3 innings of relief pitching. Ashleigh Hopf started the game but allowed two runs on three hits in the first inning before being pulled.

First baseman Bethany Davis was too much to handle for Pikeville in game one as she belted a pair of late home runs to build the 5-0 lead. Her performance overcame UPIKE shortstop Taylor Weeks going 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored and second baseman Emily Castle driving in a run on her one hit. Third baseman Hollie Hinkle added a 2-for-2 performance with a run and walk in the loss as well.
The Bears scored two runs in both the first and third innings of game two to take their 4-1 lead as Castle added two more hits, including an RBI double, and outfielder Sara Browning drove in a run as well with a 2-for-3 showing.

Down 4-1 the Patriots completed every bit of their comeback in the fourth inning as they strung together five hits to go along with two UPIKE errors. Miranda Owens replaced Morris for the final three innings and allowed just two hits, but the Bears couldn’t come up with any more runs.

UPIKE is back in action at 1 p.m. ET on Friday hosting Campbellsville (Ky.) for a doubleheader at Paul Butcher Field.
