UPike women’s basketball drops season opener at Alice Lloyd 93-84

PIPPA PASSES, Ky. – Brogan Conley came off the bench to score 20 points, hitting 6-of-9 3-pointers, but the University of Pikeville women’s basketball team lost its season opener at Alice Lloyd 93-84 on Tuesday.

Callisha Johnson added a team-high 21 points and Jayme Jackson was the final Bear in double figures with 16. Jackson also led UPIKE on the backboards with six rebounds.

Ariel Nickell poured in 32 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Eagles, while Carla Booth also tallied a double-double of 18 points and 10 boards as Alice Lloyd outrebounded UPIKE 44-31 for the game.
With the Eagles shooting over 50 percent from the field and hitting 16 more free throws than the Bears, Pikeville had to have a big night from behind the arc to stay in the game.

UPIKE hit eight threes in the first half and four in the second to shoot 50 percent from deep overall. The hot start helped it build a 48-40 lead at halftime after going up by as many as 11 points in the half.

The Bears led by 10 five minutes into the second half, but an 18-8 Alice Lloyd run capped off by a 3-pointer from Booth tied the score at 60 with just over nine minutes left to play. Alice Lloyd took its first lead since 12-10 on a free throw by Cortney Stiltner and never gave it up.
Stiltner added a basket with 4:31 to go that put the Eagles up by 10 at 74-64.

The closest UPIKE got from there was six points on a Conley three, but Alice Lloyd kept its lead around 10 points for the final two minutes, going to the free-throw line 16 times in the last minute and a half.
UPIKE has a quick turnaround, hosting King (Tenn.) at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday at the East Kentucky Exposition Center.
