PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Callisha Johnson scored 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the University of Pikeville women’s basketball team past Asbury (Ky.) 91-83 in exhibition play on Tuesday at the East Kentucky Exposition Center.
The win, although not counting towards the regular season record, got first-year head coach Joanna Bernabei-McNamee off to a good start. Five of her Bears finished in double digits scoring.
Joining Johnson was Kelah Eldridge with 14 points, Christin Haney with 13, Brogan Conley with 12 and Cheyenne Madden added 11. Haney also added five rebounds and five assists.
After building a double-digit lead in the second half, Asbury got back in the game late, eventually tying the game at 83 with less than three minutes to play. UPIKE closed the game with an 8-0 run to hold off the Eagles for the win.
UPIKE has one more exhibition game on the schedule, taking on Louisville at 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky. The regular-season opener is on Nov. 12 at Alice Lloyd (Ky.).
