UVA Wise drops men's / women's double header to Georgetown

Wise, Virginia - Georgetown College outscored UVa-Wise 36-23 in the second half en route to a 75-54 Mid-South Conference victory on Monday. The Tigers placed five players in double figure scoring to post the victory while the Cavaliers' Josh Jordan and Jermaine Wright each finished in double figures.

Despite serious foul trouble, Georgetown took a 39-31 lead into the half. In the opening half, five Tigers had at least two fouls while Georgetown racked up 15 overall fouls. UVa-Wise took advantage of the fouls by going to the charity stripe 16 times and connecting on 11 to stay within striking distance of the defending conference champions.

Georgetown flexed its muscles in the second half by limiting UVa-Wise to just 9-31 shooting while hitting four second half three pointers to coast to the 75-54 road victory. Russ Middleton and Johonne Hamilton led the Tigers with 14 points each while Tyrone Shelly, Garel Craig, and Anthony Carter also posted double figure scoring for the NAIA eighth ranked team. Josh Jordan finished with 11 points and nine rebounds in a losing effort while Jermaine Wright collected 10 points and nine boards for UVa-Wise.

The loss drops UVa-Wise to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in Mid-South play; the Cavaliers will return to action on Monday when the team plays host to Virginia University-Lynchburg.

Wise, Virginia-The University of Virginia's College at Wise women's basketball squad gave the visiting Georgetown College Tigers a scare, but the nationally-ranked Tigers were able to escape with a hard fought victory, 67-53. The Tigers led by 14 at the half and won by the same margin, going wire to wire on the home standing Cavaliers. Both teams struggled mightily from the field, as the Tigers shot 29% from the field while the Cavaliers only managed to hit 32% of their shots. The difference proved to be efficiency behind the arc, as Georgetown knocked down multiple three point baskets while the Cavs struggled from long distance and missed all 13 attempts. Kristin Mullins led the Cavs in scoring with 16, while Georgetown's Dev King and Andrea Howard matched Mullins' point total.

The Cavs never got closer than one point, as Georgetown jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and never looked back. The Tigers extended their lead to double digits for the first time nearing the end of the first half, and the Cavs were unable to crack the 10-point lead throughout the second half.

Kristin Mullins led the Cavs in scoring, pouring in 16 points on 8-14 shooting. Senior guard Amber Carter was the only other Cavalier in double digits, adding 10 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Carter and forward Chelsea Cluesman led the UVa-Wise in rebounds with six, while Cluesman added five points.

Post extraordinaire Dev King led the contest in rebounds, grabbing 15 on the night, including an incredible 10 offensive rebounds. She added 16 points and one block on 6-14 shooting and knocked down 4-5 free throws. Andrea Howard also added 16 points, while grabbing four rebounds. Jessica Waddle was the only other Tiger in double digits, scoring 10 points and dishing out four assists.

With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 2-5 overall and 1-5 in the Mid-South Conference. UVa-Wise will see action again tomorrow, as they travel to take on Liberty University.
