LEBANON, Tenn. – Megan Dillion hit two home runs and UVa-Wise pounded out 21 hits en route to a double-header sweep at Cumberland University on Wednesday.
The visiting Cavaliers struck for two runs in the opening inning of the first game and held on to claim a 5-3 win before overpowering the Patriots, 14-3, in the finale.
UVa-Wise (8-1, 3-1 MSC) scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning of Wednesday's opening game to stake starter Rachel Hawks to a lead. The score would remain 2-0 until the bottom of the third when Cumberland University (9-4, 0-2 MSC) struck for a run to cut the deficit in half. In the frame, the Patriots would use a base hit, a wild pitch, and an RBI single by Natalie Garcia to dent the scoreboard.
An inning later, Cumberland would tie the game on an error on an attempted steal. Hawks would cool the rally by retiring the next three hitters in order to keep the game knotted at 2-2. The Cavaliers would regain the lead in the sixth on an RBI single by Natasha Dean; the base hit scored Sarah Wiltshire who led off the inning with an infield single. In the seventh, UVa-Wise would extend its lead to three by plating a pair of runs. In the inning, the Cavs scored two runs with two outs in the inning on a fielding error on a Kirsten Velazquez ground ball. Hawks would surrender a run in the bottom of the seventh but would work out of the jam to preserve the two run victory.
Game two saw Head Coach Karen Bitter's club strike for eight runs in the game's first three innings as Dillion belted a two-run home run in the second and a grand slam in the third to blow the game open. UVa-Wise would add six more runs over the fourth and fifth inning to claim a run-rule 14-3 Mid-South win. Charity Lawson and Wiltshire joined Dillion with two hits and Kristina Romualdo added three RBI in completing the sweep.
UVa-Wise will return to action on March 2 when the team faces Wingate University and North Greenville.
