WISE - UVa-Wise continued its winning ways by extending its winning streak to 12 games by sweeping its regular season finale over Rio Grande. The host Cavaliers won game one, 2-1 prior to run-ruling the RedStorm 10-2 in five innings in game two.
In the opener, UVa-Wise (30-19, 18-10 MSC) scored n the game’s first inning on an RBI groundout by Kristina Romualdo. The groundout allowed Sarah Wiltshire to scamper home after leading off the inning with a walk.
Rio Grande (22-17, 11-15 MSC) tied the game in the fourth inning when Haley Gwin hit a solo home run over the centerfield fence.
In the home half of the inning, the Cavs would score would be the decisive run when Mindy Combs scored on a wild pitch. The right fielder led off the inning with a double and moved to third on an infield single by Kirsten Velazquez.
UVa-Wise starter Rachel Hawks would hold the lead as she hurled a complete game three-hitter. The right hander allowed three hits, struck out eight, walked one, and allowed one run in improving her record to 18-10.
Rio Grande starter Kimberly Hazlett was the tough luck loser as she allowed five hits, struck out five, walked two, and allowed two runs in the loss.
Game two saw the Cavs have three players collect three hits in the run-rule victory. Wiltshire, Christinia Ziemba, and Megan Dillion all went 3-4 in the win. Wiltshire added three stolen bases and two run scores, Ziemba scored twice, and Dillion added two RBIs and two runs scored.
Game one starter, Hawks also started game two and did not allow an earned run as she struck out three and allowed five hits. The victory was her 19th of the season, which ranks her first in the Mid-South Conference.
UVa-Wise will next play in the Mid-South Conference Tournament this Saturday in Kingsport, Tenn. The Cavs will first play at 10:00 a.m. against Shawnee State University.
