LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- UVa-Wise's Charity Lawson is the Mid-South Conference Softball Player of the Week and teammate Rachel Hawks is the MSC Pitcher of the Week, conference officials announced on Monday.
It marks the second straight week that the Cavaliers have swept the conference's softball weekly honors.
The conference honor is the second for Hawks -- who also earned the award last week -- while Lawson secures her first weekly honor of her career.
Lawson had a monster week at the plate with a .474 (9-for-19) batting average, three home runs and 15 RBIs.
Lawson, a Duffield, Va., junior catcher, went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and eight RBIs in the Cavaliers' 17-1 win over Bluefield. For the week, two of Lawson's three homers were grand slams.
She scored eight runs, amassed three doubles and produced a 1.105 slugging percentage during the week.
Hawks ended the week 4-0 -- all four complete-game efforts -- with a save while helping the Cavaliers to a 6-0 week last week.
The Suffolk, Va., junior posted a 2.30 ERA while striking out 17 batters in 24-1/3 innings.
Hawks best game came in a 2-1 win over St. Catharine. She scattered seven hits while allowing the one run with five strikeouts and no walks.
UVa-Wise finished the regular season 30-19 and 18-10 in Mid-South games. The Cavs will begin Mid-South Tournament play on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. against Shawnee State University in Kingsport, Tenn.
