Wise, Virginia - UVa-Wise has improved all season on the defensive end and on Thursday the Cavaliers hard worked paid off with a 58-51 win over number eight Lindsey Wilson. The Cavs held the visiting Blue Raiders to just 34.5 percent from the field and 20 percent from beyond the arc.
UVa-Wise forward Jermaine Wright continued to lock down the opposing team’s premier offensive threat by limiting former NAIA National Player of the Week Chase Spreen to six points on two of nine shooting. The defensive effort was highlighted by forcing 16 Blue Raider turnovers that led to 17 points for the Cavs.
UVa-Wise guard Travis Berry led all scorers with 17 points while Josh Jordan added 12 points for the victorious Cavs. Chase Cox led Lindsey with 14 points on five of ten shooting while Justin Archie added eight points and nine rebounds. The victory marked the first time UVa-Wise has ever defeated a NAIA Division I top ten opponent, Lindsey Wilson entered the contest ranked eighth in the nation and in a tie for the Mid-South lead.
The win improves UVa-Wise to 7-9 overall and 4-5 in league action while Lindsey Wilson falls to 15-5 and 7-2 in the Mid-South. The Cavs will return to action on Saturday when they play host to Mid-South foe Cumberlands for a 4:00 p.m. tip inside the Convocation Center.
