WISE, Va. - UVa-Wise added to its 2012 men’s basketball recruiting class recently when Matt Day, Charles George, Paul Evans, and Nathaniel Worley agreed to play collegiately as a Cavalier. Day is a finalist for Mr. Kentucky Basketball while George, Evans, and Worley each averaged more than 10 points per game as a high school senior.
In addition to being a finalist for the Mr. Kentucky Basketball Award, Matt Day was a first team all-state honoree while also garnering 14th Region Player of the Year accolades. The 6’7 forward from Buckhorn High School finished his career as the school’s all time leader in points, 2,294 and rebounds, 1,358. Day highlighted his prep career by establishing a new WYMT Mountain Classic scoring record with 47 points in a victory over Knott County.
At Benedictine Prep in Richmond, Virginia, Charles George averaged 10.2 points, 5.4 assists, and 3.6 steals per contest as a senior. At Benedictine, the 5’11 point guard aided the school to 78 wins in three years to go along with three consecutive VISAA Final Four appearances. As a junior, he aided the school to the VISAA crown; throughout his career Benedictine also posted impressive victories over nationally recognized programs such as Oak Hill Academy, Gonzaga Prep, and Paul VI Catholic.
Paul Evans comes to UVa-Wise after a stellar career at Mill Creek High School in Gwinnett, Georgia. A year ago, the 6’0 shooting guard averaged 15 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals per game while shooting 44 percent from beyond the three point line. An All-Region Seven performer, he was also selected first team All-Gwinnett County. Evans aided Mill Creek to three consecutive Class 5-A state tournaments, including an Elite 8 appearance in 2011.
Nathaniel Worley was a second team All-Region C and first team All-Mountain Empire District selection following his senior season at Fort Chiswell High School. The 6’1 guard aided Fort Chiswell to the 2012 Region C crown and a spot in the VHSL Final Four.
Day, George, Evans, and Worley join Justin Brown and Pap Mor Sall who also recently committed to the program. The group of newcomers will look to fill the void of losing three starting seniors off the 2011-2012 squad.
