Union explodes for 13-2 win over Campbellsville

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - A 10-run fifth inning was more than enough to send the Union baseball team to a 13-2 victory over visiting Campbellsville (Ky.) on Wednesday.

The victory is the Bulldogs' fourth in the last five games as they improve to 8-5 on the season. The Tigers drop to 8-2 overall.

Jared Tomany (Bryant, Wis.) drove in a team-high three RBIs in going 2-for-4. Nelson Price (Burkesville, Ky.) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two driven in. Tyler Young (Manchester, Ky.) had an RBI and a run scored as he went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Vance Sullivan (Verona, Ky.) picked up the win, tossing 1 1/3 innings in relief. He allowed no runs or hits with one walk and one strikeout improving to 2-0 on the season.

Sean Bouthilette suffered the loss, giving up four earned runs on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings of work. He is now 1-2.

Turning Point
Campbellsville scored the game's first run in the top of the fourth before Union posting three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead. The Bulldogs put the game out of reach with a 10-run fifth en route to the 13-2 decision.

Union sent 15 batters to the plate in the fifth, rapping out seven hits and taking advantage of two walks and three hit by pitches. Tomany had the big hit of the rally with a two-run single.

The Tigers scored a run in the sixth to make the final 13-2.

By the Numbers

* The 12 hits match the season high for the Bulldogs. Union also had 12 hits in a 10-9 win over Asbury (Ky.) on Feb. 12.
* The 13 runs is a season high for Union. Previously, the Bulldogs had only scored 10 runs in a game once.
* Union has 36 stolen bases on the season with LaVance Anderson (Bowling Green, Ky.) and Miguel Mendez (Lansing, Mich.) leading the way with nine apiece. Last season, Union only had 21 stolen bases through the first 13 games.
* Kyle Williams (Paducah, Ky.) pitched well in his Bulldog debut, throwing two innings of shutout ball with three hits and one walk. He was helped out by two double plays.
* As a team, Union boasts a .439 on-base percentage thanks to 79 walks and 25 hit by pitches

Up Next
Union will open Appalachian Athletic Conference play Friday and Saturday with a three-game set at Point (Ga.). Friday's twinbill is set for 2 p.m. with Saturday's nine-inning game slated for 1 p.m.
