MONTREAT, N.C. - Union splite an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader at Montreat (N.C.) Saturday, winning the first game 9-3 but dropping the nightcap 3-2.
Union extended its season-best win streak to five games before the one-run loss. The Bulldogs are now 14-10 overall and 4-4 in the AAC, while the Cavaliers are 10-12 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
In the opener, Union used the long ball to slug its way to the 9-3 victory. Tyler Brake (Burlington, Ky.) clubbed a grand slam, while Nelson Price (Burkesville, Ky.) belted two homers as well.
Price pulled double duty and got the job done on the mound, pitching a complete game to get the win. He is now 3-3 on the year.
Luke Collis (St. Charles, Mo.) pitched well for Union in the finale, allowing only 3 hits in going the distance. However, Union only collected three hits itself as Montreat pulled out the 3-2 win.
Miguel Mendez (Lansing, Mich.) collected both of Union's RBIs in the seventh inning.
The series will conclude with a nine-inning contest on Sunday at 1 p.m.
