Union, Point split AAC doubleheader

WEST POINT, Ga. - The Union baseball team split an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader with host Point (Ga.) on Friday, winning the opener 6-3 before dropping the nightcap 4-3.

The Bulldogs are now 9-6 overall and 1-1 in the AAC, while the Skyhawks are 9-7 and 1-1 in conference play. Union and Point will complete the three-game set with a nine-inning contest on Saturday at 1 p.m.

J.D. Burrell (Amanda, Ohio) had a big night, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs in the two games.

In the first game, Union scored twice in the opening frame with Point scratching out a run in the bottom of the frame to make it 2-1. The Bulldogs scored another run in the third only to have the Skyhawks answer with two of their own to even the score at 3-3 after three.

Union then scored a run in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to register the 6-3 victory.

Luke Collis (St. Charles, Mo.) went the distance, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and no walks with five strikeouts. Corey Thompson suffered the loss, dropping to 1-2.

In the nightcap, Point took a 3-0 lead after the second and held that margin until the fifth. Union rallied for three runs thanks to a two-run single from Burrell and a RBI single from LaVance Anderson (Bowling Green, Ky.), tying the score in the top of the fifth.

However, the Skyhawks pushed a run across in the bottom of the fifth for a 4-3 advantage and made it hold.

Evan Hilton got the win for Point to improve to 2-1 on the year, while Drew Hillard (Lexington, Ky.) took the loss to fall to 2-2. Travis Tartleton collected his third save of the season.
