Union drops 73-67 AAC contest to Point

WEST POINT, Ga. - Union suffered a setback Wednesday in its quest of the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season title as the Bulldogs dropped a 73-67 decision to host Point (Ga.).

The loss drops Union to 16-8 overall and 12-4 in league play. Point improves to 14-11 overall and 7-8 in the AAC.

The game was close throughout as 17 lead changes and 12 ties. Union never had a lead larger than two points, while Point's largest lead was seven.

Tied at 33-all at the half, Point looked as if it was going to pull away when Desiree Owens sank two free throws to make it 53-47 with 9:39 remaining. Union countered with a 12-4 run to grab a 59-57 edge at the 6:20 mark. Lydia Nash and Haley Perkins each scored six points during the rally.

However, Point reclaimed the lead at 60-59 on an Amirai Blakely free throw with 4:46 to go, and the Lady Skyhawks bumped the margin to 64-60 with 3:30 left. Union twice cut the deficit to one with the last time coming at the 2:31 mark when Nash sank a pair of free throws to make it 66-65.

Point made it a five-point game after two more free throws from Owens with 52 seconds to play. Amber Taylor hit a bucket to make it 70-67 with 46 seconds remaining, but Point sealed the win by hitting 3-of-4 free throws in the closing moments for the 73-67 decision.

Nash paced Union with 25 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field and by going 11-for-11 at the foul line. Perkins was the only other Bulldog to score in double figures as she put up 12.

Owens led all scorers with 37 points. She went 12-of-22 from the field, 2-of-6 from behind the arc and connected on 11-of-15 at the line. Alex Tucker helped out with 13.
