KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Lindsey Waters and Amber Taylor each turned in a double-double to lead No. 3 seed Union to a 68-59 victory over No. 6 seed Virginia Intermont in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.
The tournament is being held at the MeadowView Marriot Conference Resort & Convention Center.
With the win, Union is now 20-9 overall and advances to the semifinal round where it will face No. 2 seed Tennessee Wesleyan Friday at 5 p.m.
Taylor finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds with Waters recording 10 points and 12 rebounds. Waters also blocked three shots to give her 91 on the season.
Three other Lady Bulldogs scored in double figures. Haley Perkins led the way with 13 points, while Lydia Nash and Laura Perkins each chipped in 10.
Other than tying the score at 6-6 early on, Union trailed the entire opening half and was down 28-25 at the break. Union opened the second period on a 13-3 run to grab a 38-31 advantage with 13:54 to play.
Virginia Intermont fought back, cutting the margin to 38-36 following an Ashley Lindholm 3-pointer with 13:33 remaining. Union responded and quickly had a 51-41 cushion after a Nash bucket with 9:54 on the clock. Union led by as much as 12, and Virginia Intermont never got closer than six points as Union wrapped up the 68-59 decision.
Rainey Story paced Virginia Intermont with 15 points, while Lindholm followed with 12.
The Lady Cobras finish the year with a 14-17 overall record.
