BARBOURVILLE, Ky (WYMT) - The No. 24 ranked Union Bulldogs are in the midst of a memorable season. Preseason they were picked to finish in the middle of the pack, "It's been great we were projected really low in the rankings I want to say 5th or 6th and we just took that as an insult and used it as our motivation everyday in practice and we just proved everyone wrong and we're just going to continue proving everyone wrong." Said Senior Guard Tarik Smith.
Now as the regular season is winding down, the Bulldogs have already clinched the outright Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season championship their first outright regular season championship since the 1971-72 season.
Junior Forward Tyler Wagner talked about Wednesday's win, "It's a great thing. I never thought i would experience this it was my first time cutting down the nets last night it was just a cool thing."
Head Coach Kevin Burton is in his second year with the Bulldogs, and his players say he has changed the culture of Union basketball.
"It's awesome, especially because we're making huge strides not just little strides and we're just getting better and better everyday. He's come in and really helped this program and the players he's brought in have been just tremendous in how we have excelled in our program," said Wagner.
Coach Burton talked about the season overall, "We were just excited for the chance to compete for a conference championship and with us being able to wrap up an automatic berth to the national tournament this quickly is quite an accomplishment and something we should be proud of and certainly proud of my guys for coming together and doing that in such a short time."
Accomplishing one goal, now they turn their attention to the next.
