WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men’s Golf team has continued to show dominance throughout the Mid-South Conference (MSC) in the 2011-2012 season. Continued consistent play throughout the season has the Patriots climbing the national rankings nearly every week this season. One player in particular is continuing to show the NAIA that he is making strides to be named one of the best in the nation and for his latest efforts has earned a big honor from the NAIA.
Aaron Watkins (Harlan, KY) has been named the NAIA National Men’s Golfer of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Watkins was selected based on his performances from April 2 – 8 and was chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated group golfer of the week selections. The honor is the second such award in the career of Watkins, who also received the 2011 season’s first Golfer of the Week award.
Watkins’ shot a first round 68 on Monday at the MSC Spring Invite on April 2nd to take a share of the lead into the 2nd round. That is where Watkins then exploded for a school record-tying 65 in the final round to finish at nine-under-par (-9) and the MSC Spring Invite Individual Championship on April 3rd. The field contained 46 golfers from eight conference schools and the Patriots led by Watkins shot a then school record 279 on day one, but broke that record in the final round shooting a 269 to finish at 548, another new school record for a 36 hole tournament. The Patriots as a team shot an impressive eighteen-under-par (-18) for the tournament that was held at Cattails Golf Course in Tennessee.
Watkins has been named the MSC Golfer of the Week twice this season and six times in his career.
The next NAIA Men’s Golfer of the Week will be announced on April 18.
The Patriots will be back in action on April 23rd and April 24th at the MSC Championship at Maywood Country Club in Bardstown, Kentucky.
