LEXINGTON, Ky. (WYMT) - The Mark Stoops era did not start the way Kentucky fans had hoped it would with the Wildcats falling to Western Kentucky 35-26 Saturday night down in Nashville.
Defense was a big issue for Kentucky, allowing 487 total yards to the Hilltoppers, including 216 on the ground. Stoops says when faced with adversity his team ignored basic fundamentals, something that must be improved.
"When things go bad, you go back to fundamentals and paying attention to the small details. We lost sight of the details on both sides of the ball. For that, I accept that responsibility because you had a good idea that some of that was going to happen and it did. Guys just kind of -- they mean well, but that doesn't mean they're playing well. You can't just get out there and start doing your own thing and running under blocks and so on and so forth."
The Kentucky Wildcats will look to bounce back from their season opening loss this weekend when they host the Miami (Oh.) Redhawks at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington. Miami also enters the game with an 0-1 record. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00pm and the game can be seen live on Fox Sports. The Wildcats are currently a 13 1/2-point favorite in the game.
