Wildcats Looking to First Major Scrimmage

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky football team practiced two hours Friday morning on the Tim Couch Practice Fields as the Wildcats look toward the first major spring scrimmage Saturday.

“Today, we are just trying to tune up and get ourselves ready for the scrimmage tomorrow,” Coach Joker Phillips said. “We will scrimmage a little bit longer tomorrow. Before the scrimmage we will do some individual and some special teams then let them play.

“We need to continue to find out who are playmakers are,” Phillips said when asked about his goals for the scrimmage. “We need to continue fundamentals and techniques, finding out who can make plays for use – offense, defense and special teams.”

Speaking of special teams, Phillips had an encouraging outlook on the search for a punt returner following the graduation of Randall Burden.

“We had a half-line drill today with our special teams trying to find out who our returner is,” Phillips said. “I really was pleased with (Demarco) Robinson. We’ll start working him more and more and trying to play him as our number one and giving the two guy less reps because we need to make sure he is our one. I think he has the ability, but now we need to start feeding him with confidence and get him to understand our blocking schemes also. It’s coming down to making sure he has the confidence, and that’s our job. He needs to leave here having the confidence to be our returner because he definitely has the ability.”

The coach also gave an overview of how spring practice has gone as Friday’s workout marked the halfway point, the eighth of 15 practices allowed.

“I feel good about the way we are starting to throw the football,” Phillips said. “That was one of our goals offensively. On defense, they’re having a better understanding of our defense in year two (under defensive coordinator Rick Minter). The ones (first team) got it. The twos (second team) have a long way to go. You and I know, in this league, you can’t play with just 11 guys. We’ve got to get the twos up to speed. Overall, I feel good about the way we are throwing and catching the football.”

Media Advisory for Saturday: The open media period is 10:05 to 10:30 a.m. at the stadium. The scrimmage is expected to end between noon and 12:15. Media desiring interviews should be at Gate One of the stadium by 11:45 in order to register interview requests.

Spring Practice Schedule and Notes: Kentucky spring football practice started Wednesday, March 21 and will continue for 14 practices before the Blue/White Game on Saturday, April 21.
