Our DQ Grill and Chill Pigskin Previews roll on with the Williamsburg Yellowjackets. A team that is looking to finally get to the region final.
Williamsburg has won the Class A District 6 title three out of the past four years. And each of those times, they were ousted in the second round of the playoffs. The Yellow Jackets now have their sights set on getting to the Region Final this year.
“We’ve got a bunch of young talent,” Junior Quarterback Logan Hamblin says. “We've got the state championship middle school, we've got a big line, wide receivers that can catch. I think we're going to be pretty good. I think we have a chance to run at region.”
“We deserve it,” Junior Lineman Jacob Jeffers says. “We're out here everyday we lift in the offseason. We got two weeks off during the offseason and then we're back lifting. We're hoping this is our year.”
It all starts with the offense. The Jackets like spread it out and run the football. Hamblin threw for almost 14-hundred yards and 20 touchdowns. Coach Jerry Herron will continue that philosophy this season.
“We're really kind of an open offense,” Herron says. “We try to be balanced. Our philosophy is we're going to take what the defense gives us and try to put some points on the board.”
The Yellowjackets believe they belong in the talk for a Region Title with teams like Hazard, Harlan, and Pikeville. Herron says these kids have the right attitude to get to that plateau.
”We know there's tough teams ahead of us,” Herron says. “And we know we have a big road ahead of us but these kids have bought in to what we're trying to do. They show up and work hard and it would be huge for the school and the program to get in to the region final and hopefully try to chip away and win eventually”
Williamsburg opened up 2011 with a 58-nothing win over Jellico, Tennessee. They look to keep it rolling Friday as they travel to Harlan.
