WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) women's basketball team has shown great potential as they have racked up a 7-2 record overall with a 2-2 Mid-South Conference (MSC) record. The 1st edition of the 2012-2013 NAIA Top 25 poll was released on Tuesday and the Patriots have made a slight jump as UC is now ranked the #16 team in the country after having been ranked #18 in the pre-season poll.
Although the Patriots have fallen to two conference rivals, now #12 Shawnee State University and #7 Cumberland University, they have also had big wins over a pair of other MSC teams, University of Rio Grande and Bluefield College. They also have a pair of wins over Columbia College who was ranked #21 at the time and are still currently receiving votes in the Top 25 poll.
The top spot in the NAIA Top 25 goes to Lubbock Christian (Texas) who received 10 1st place votes and 281 total points. Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) received the remaining first-place vote and 272 points to move up one spot to No. 2. Other MSC teams also were included in the Top 25 were Cumberland University (#7), Campbellsville University (#11), Shawnee State University (#12), and Georgetown College (#18).
The Patriots still have a tough schedule to finish out the 2012-13 season as they will play all conference teams for the entire month of January and also the entire month of February. Coming soon, they will travel the week of December 9th to Nashville, TN to take on both Fisk University and Trevecca Nazarene University on the 14th and 15th. They will then be traveling to Honolulu, HI and on the 19th and 20th where they will participate in the Hoop and Surf Classic before coming back to the states on January 3rd and 5th to take on Georgetown College and St. Catherine College at home in the O. Wayne Rollins Center.
