Women’s Basketball Patriots Stay Sharp; Go 2-0 at CU Classic

The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women’s Basketball team is known nationwide as a winning program. That tradition continues once again in the 2011-2012 season as the Patriots (#14 NAIA) went into the Cumberland University Classic this past weekend with a 10-1 record and 3-0 in the Mid-South Conference (MSC). With Trevecca Nazarene (TNU) and Cumberland University (CU) on schedule for the weekend, the Patriots went into Lebanon, TN with a purpose and now will walk away with two big wins to enter into the New Year.

On Thursday, the Patriots hit the floor against Trevecca Nazarene on a neutral floor. The Patriots defeated TNU earlier this month at home by an 82-64 margin. This time around, the Trojans were able to hold the Patriots to far less points, but the Patriots stuck with their game plan and were able to come away with a 59-54 victory.

UC was led by Dace Bicane (Riga, Latvia) and Haley Ratliff (Pikeville, KY) who both had 14 points and 9 rebounds each. Senior Lauren Wombles (London, KY) also contributed 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 8 steals. The Patriots shot only 33% from the floor and a meager 15% from three point land. The free throw shooting helped keep the lead for the Patriots going 19-27 from the charity stripe (70%).

On Friday, UC went up against host Cumberland University. The Patriots were held to just 25 points in the first half but still had a 9 point lead at the break 25-16. UC then opened up the floor and added to their lead to take a 65-44 win from the Bulldogs.

Senior Lauren Wombles led the way with 23 points and 4 rebounds. Fellow senior Haley Ratliff added 14 points and 7 rebounds on the way to the 21 point win. The Patriots overall shot much better in this game shooting 50% from the floor and 42% from the three point line. UC only made it to the free throw line 10 times in the game but did well sinking 8 of their attempts for an 80% showing from the charity stripe.

The Patriots will be back in action on January 5th as they hit the road to start the New Year at the University of Rio Grande. Tipoff for that game is set for 6:00 pm.
