The University of the Cumberlands Patriot Women’s Basketball team had one of the best seasons in the program’s history in the 2011-2012 season.
A 28-4 overall record, a regular season Mid-South Conference (MSC) Championship, and a MSC Tournament Championship were all big achievements for the Patriot ladies this season. The NAIA Postseason poll has been released and the Patriots were still looked at among the nation as one of its best teams.
The Patriots came in at #8 in the NAIA’s Postseason Poll for the 2011-2012 season. This is a two spot drop from #6 going into the NAIA National Tournament. NAIA National Champions Oklahoma City University won the right to #1 with the runner up Union University locking themselves into the #2 position. Other notable schools finishing in the NAIA Top 25 Postseason Poll are Shawnee State University (#6), Georgetown College (#11), and Campbellsville University (#25). Lindsey Wilson College also finished the season receiving votes in the poll.
The Patriot ladies’ season ended abruptly in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament as they fell to Rogers State University in overtime 80-73. The Patriots set numerous records over the season including tying the school record for consecutive wins with 21 games. The Patriots also only allowed their opponents to score over 70 points only three times in 32 total games.
Head Coach Melissa Irvin and staff are already hot on the recruiting trail for the 2012-2013 season as they will look to build upon a season that will not be forgotten for many years. The Patriots do lose four seniors, but will look to fill those positions with great young talent who can come in to make an impact for the Patriots next season.
