Women’s Golf Win MSC Regular Season Championship

The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Women’s Golf team carried some great momentum into this week’s Mid-South Conference (MSC) Tournament being held at Cattails Golf Course in Kingsport, Tennessee. The Patriots won the Southeastern Kentucky Intercollegiate Tournament last week and were able to keep that “mojo” going as they came away with the MSC Tournament Title on Tuesday.

Round one was fantastic for the Patriots as they were able to jump out in front early and hold a sizable lead going into the 2nd round. The Patriots shot a team total of 307 in round one, giving themselves an 8 shot lead heading into the final round of play. Freshman Cristina Jimenez (Murcia, Spain) led the Patriots along with the entire field after day one shooting a 74 (+3). Right behind her was teammate McKinzie Price (Somerset, KY) as she finished day one shooting a 75 (+4). Liz Stephens (Tockington, Bristol UK) followed suit as she was just one stroke back of Price shooting a first round 76 (+5). Taylor Gillis (Lawrenceburg, KY) shot a day one total of 82 (+11) while Laura Beth Harris (Glasgow, KY) rounded out the team shooting a first round 84 (+13). Two individuals also participated for the Patriots in the tournament. Chelsea Branscum (Somerset, KY) finished day one shooting an 80 (+9) while Shannon Bishop (Glasgow, KY) shot a first round 83 (+12).

Round two was much of the same for the Patriots as consistency helped lead the Patriots to shooting a 309 and a 10 shot win over Campbellsville University for the MSC Tournament Title. It took Liz Stephens three extra holes of play, but after shooting a 2nd round 76 to end her tournament at 152 (+10); she came away with the individual tournament title. Price shot a day two 78 to end her tournament with a 153 (+11) to finish in 3rd place. Jimenez followed just behind Price as she shot a 2nd round 80 to end the tournament at 154 (+12) in 4th place. Harris had a great 2nd round shooting a team low 75 on day two to finish with a 159 (+17) and in 8th place. Gillis rounded out the team shooting a 2nd round 92 to finish with a 174 (+32) and 18th place. Individuals Branscum and Bishop also finished well for the Patriots. Branscum shot a 2nd round 80 to finish at 160 (+18) and tied for 9th place. Bishop finished the tournament shooting a day two total of 82 to end the tournament with a 165 (+23) and in 14th place.

Head Coach Chris Kraftick commented, “I’m excited to win our first outright regular season MSC title. This team is by far the most talented I’ve had and they are coming together at the right time. We’ve seen this before with Laura Beth. Once you get that first win they tend to come in bunches. I’m so proud of Liz. She is such a great kind and a very hard worker. McKinzie and Cristina had great tournaments and Laura Beth played a really good 2nd round. I think her game is really close to clicking like it did last fall.”

The Patriots will have a week off before heading to Daytona Beach, Florida on April 14th-15th as they will participate in the Bash at the Beach at the LPGA International Course.
