HINDMAN, Ky. (WYMT) - Monday, January 6, 2014 will mark the opening night of the 27th Annual WYMT/Whayne Supply Mountain Basketball Classic. Knott County Central High School will serve as the host for this year's tournament, which features one of the stronger fields in recent years.
Aside from the strong field for the boys' tournament, the event also includes the first-ever girls classic tournament. The girls' tournament features four teams and will conclude with a Championship game on Saturday, January 11.
The boys' field includes five teams that are currently ranked in the Alice Lloyd College Mountain Top 10 (No. 1 Knott Central, No. 2 Perry Central, No. 6 Cordia, No. 7 Hazard, No. 10 Jackson County), and two others who have been ranked at some point this season (Bell County and Lawrence County). Meanwhile, the four teams that make up the girls' classic are all ranked in the Mountain Top 10 poll (No. 1 Bell County, No. 5 Harlan County, No. 6 Magoffin County, No. 9 Leslie County).
While the basketball games and the excitement surrounding them may receive a lot of attention, the goal of the Mountain Classic is provide scholarships to students in Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky to help them further their education. Since the first Mountain Classic tournament in 1988 more than 1,200 scholarships have awarded to regional students, and participating schools have benefited from the more than 2.5 million dollars raised through the Classic, and none of that could be possible without the hard work and dedication of countless volunteers and the generosity of area businesses.
The week of the Mountain Classic is always one of the more exciting weeks of basketball for the entire season, and this year's tournament is sure to not disappoint. We hope to see next week at the Morton Combs Athletic Complex for the 27th Annual WYMT/Whayne Supply Mountain Basketball Classic!
