HINDMAN, Ky. (WYMT) - The 2014 WYMT Whayne Supply Mountain Basketball Classic came to a dramatic end Friday night with the No. 1 Bell County Lady Cats and No. 7 Hazard Bulldogs coming away with tournament championships.
The Lady Cats ended the first quarter against No. 5 Magoffin County on a 19-2 run, and rolled to an easy 71-42 victory, claiming the first girls Mountain Classic title.
Tournament MVP Maci Morris scored a game-high 22 points for the Lady Cats. Katrina Johnson (13), Morgan Garnett (11), and Jess Sanders (10) also scored in double figures for Bell County.
Magoffin County was led by Madison Reed's 19 points. All-Tournament Team member Jamie Castle finished with 15 points for the Lady Hornets.
The boys championship game was expected to be an instant classic and it did not disappoint. Hazard got 16 points from Most Valuable Player Collier Mobelini, including four 3-pointers, and edged the defending champion Commodores 54-52 in overtime. Josh Hollan and Chris Hudson also finished in double figures for the Bulldogs, scoring 14 and 11, respectively.
Perry Central, playing without point guard and 2013 Classic MVP Braxton Beverly, got 16 points from senior forward Justin Johnson. Senior John Toomer pitched in 10 for the Commodores.
