For many people here in the mountains, the month of January means one thing --- the Annual Mountain Classic Basketball Tournament has started.
On Tuesday, hundreds of fans filled Perry Central's gym to watch their favorite teams compete in the tournament that has become a tradition.
Fans cheering, the buzzer screeching and basketball shoes squeaking on the court are a few sounds that let you know its tournament time here in the mountains.
“Mountain basketball is special, if you go down in central Kentucky or western Kentucky, you don’t have the support you do here in eastern Kentucky."
"These fans come out and support their schools and teams and it’s a great time for everyone to come together,” said Perry Central Principal Neal Feltner.
A match-up between North Laurel and Breathitt County tipped off the tournament on Tuesday with Breathitt County taking home the first win.
Some say the tournament is not about winning or losing -- it is about coming together as a community.
Many fans said the Mountain Classic Tournament has become a deep-rooted tradition in eastern Kentucky.
Organizers say the tournament also provides a positive focus for students.
While the tournament showcases great athletic talent, it also helps send high school seniors around the region to college.
Betsy Lane and Knott Central also played at the tournament Tuesday night and Knott Central was the winner.
