MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Morehead State soccer team opens its 2013 campaign Sunday, with its lone exhibition contest, as Western Kentucky travels to Jayne Stadium for a 1 p.m. ET kick-off.
MSU returns 23 players, including nine starters from a young 2012 edition that gained momentum in its last four games with a 1-1-2 mark, which included results against two teams that reached the OVC Tournament.
Fifth-year Head Coach Warren Lipka, who guided the Eagles to back-to-back OVC Championships in his first two seasons, believes the depth of this team will be a key to success.
"We are pretty deep everywhere on the field," Lipka said. "That's what we built our program on, and that is where our championships came from."
The Eagles return 90 percent of their scoring in sophomore Kimberly Golden and junior Macy Cobb, who tied for the team lead with three goals each.
Youngstown State transfer and team co-captain Jade Flory, who scored 11 goals in two seasons with the Penguins, should also factor into the attacking plan.
The midfield is anchored by veteran junior co-captains Lindsay Oettle and Holly Tilley, while the defense will look to 2013 Preseason All-OVC member Kelsey Gomez to lead the group.
Sophomore Elizabeth Floyd, who finished the 2012 season fifth in school history with a 1.38 goals against average, is the projected starter in goal.
Eight freshmen will also battle for playing time in each position this season.
