Jacksonville, Fla. – Host Edward Walters College overcame deficits in both games of Saturday's double-header to capture a sweep over UVa-Wise. The host claimed game one 4-3 in eight innings before taking advantage of five Cavalier errors to win the finale 6-2.
In the opener, Edward Walters (4-6) used seven innings of three run baseball from Bryan Walker and a perfect frame from Darren Skawienski to overcome an early 3-0 deficit. The Tigers would score single runs in the second, third, and fourth inning after surrendering three runs in the top of the first.
Neither side was able to dent the scoreboard again until the bottom of the eighth inning when Edward Walters took advantage of two singles, a balk, and two walks to push across the game winning run.
In the loss, Tyler Hutson was the only UVa-Wise (2-2) player to produce more than one hit. The first baseman went 2-3 in the game with two RBI.
Game two once again saw the Tigers fall behind early only to eventually post a victory. UVa-Wise scored a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Hutson that scored Tommy Meier. One inning later, Meier would lace an RBI single to score Nick Impellizzeri.
In the following two innings, Edward Walters would take the lead and put it out of reach. The Tigers would score three runs in the third and fourth frames in large part due to four Cavalier errors in the innings.
The game two loss saw Meier go a perfect 3-3 as the senior extended his hitting streak to four games to open the 2013 season. In addition, Hutson lined two more hits in the game to finish the game 4-7.
