WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) football program has excelled thus far in 2013 as they carry a 3-0 record into their first bye week of the season. In their win over Belhaven University on Saturday, the Patriots dominated in every fashion on their way to a 41-17 win over the Blazers. Numerous individuals had great games but one stood out among the Mid-South Conference (MSC) as one Patriot garnered a weekly conference award.
Senior linebacker Weston Hazelhurst (Clinton, TN) won the MSC Defensive Player of the Week award last week for his stellar performance against Cumberland University. This week, Hazelhurst won the MSC Special Team Player of the Week award, which was announced on Monday. Weston was all over the field yet again this week, but this time, it was his quick thinking and burst of energy that earned him the award.
Hazelhurst returned two different kickoffs on Saturday against the Blazers, where he normally is one of the lead blockers on the return team. On his first return, he gained 20 yards. His 2nd return was on an onside kick attempt which he took 43 yards to the end zone for a touchdown, earning himself a 31.5 yards per return average and the Player of the Week award. This is the third MSC Player of the Week award for Hazelhurst, but his first for special teams.
The Patriots are on a bye week this week, but will return to action next Thursday September 26th as they travel to take on the University of Pikeville under the lights. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm in Pikeville, KY.
