Jenkins' Creech enjoying successful freshman campaign

JENKINS, Ky. (WYMT) - Jenkins freshman guard Whitney Creech is having another outstanding season.

"It's just crazy that God has blessed me like he has."

You wouldn't know it by talking with her, but Jenkins freshman Whitney Creech is putting together quite the season.

"It's got to be her character, just the way she plays, her body movement, everything is flowing with the game perfectly," says Lady Cavalier coach Ashley Addington. "I mean, even when she gets excited or when she gets frustrated, you can't even tell it. She's just got a face of steel."

Creech's accomplishments this year are pretty impressive. She's recorded four double-doubles, she became the youngest Lady Cavalier to join the 1,500-point club, she's scored at least 30 points in a game 10 times, and she set the Jenkins single game scoring record by pouring in 52 against Hazard back on January 26th.

"But the past three, four games, she's just turned it on. I think she's got a lot more confident that she can take the ball in on anybody. I don't know what triggered it, but I'm glad she's picking it up at the end of the season right before districts."

"It's just great," says Creech. "I mean, I've worked hard all season to be able to do this and I couldn't do it without my coaches and my teammates."

And that's one thing that separates Creech from a lot of players; her team-first mentality and unselfishness.

"They all love each other. This year especially, they're playing as a team. They're just like sisters. It's just like their sister's doing a great job out there," says Addington. "They'll back her up, and she'll do the same for them."

At such a young age, Creech is establishing herself as one of the top players around, shooting 48% from the floor and leading the state with a 31.4 points per game average. But Creech says you can't worry about the numbers.

Says Creech, "The hardest is going in thinking you're going to score 30 (points) every night. You can't do that. You just gotta go play and not worry about the stats."

As the year winds down, Creech is looking to help lead the Lady Cavaliers in the post-season and continue their season at least a few more weeks.
