PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville scored seven of the last eight points Monday night in a 73-69 win over Kentucky Christian University.
The win for the Bears was their fourth in five games since Coach Bill Watson announced his intention to resign at the end of the season.
The Lady Knights took a 68-66 lead with 1:24 remaining when junior Tanya Bowens nailed a three from the corner. From there, however, the Bears quickly rebounded.
Bowens finished with a game-high 30 points to go with five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
It took only nine seconds for a response, which came from junior Brogan Conley when she nailed a three from the wing to put the Bears on top 69-68. They never trailed again.
Pikeville (9-16) extended its lead to three when senior Sally Roberts stole the ball, fed it ahead to freshman Peyton Wright who found classmate Kayla Day for a layup with 46 seconds left.
KCU (14-14) got a free throw from junior Monica Stevens with 17 seconds to play, but the Bears iced it when Wright sank two free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining.
Kentucky Christian led 46-40 with 12:46 to play when junior Sharonda Jones scored inside. The Bears responded with five unanswered points over the next 1:32; from there, neither team led by more than four points.
Pikeville shot 45.2 percent thanks to going 17-of-31 (54.8 percent) in the second half. It was 6-of-18 from the arc and survived an 11-of-20 performance from the line.
KCU hit only 43.6 percent but sank 6-of-15 (40 percent) from the arc. It was 15-of-23 (65.2 percent) from the line, and held a 38-37 rebounding edge.
The Bears’ balanced scoring attack was led by Conley’s 15. Day matched her new career high, which she established Saturday at St. Catharine, with 14. Junior Callisha Johnson followed with 11.
Freshman Peyton Wright had eight points and 10 rebounds, while Roberts had nine points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Bowens was joined in double digits by junior Jessica Marshall with 11 and Jones with 10. Jones added eight rebounds.
Pikeville will be back at the East Kentucky Expo Center on Thursday night when it hosts Lindsey Wilson. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
