WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) and the University of Pikeville (UPike) are both major players in the Mid-South Conference (MSC). As both teams continue their surge into the heart of their conference schedules, a push from Mother Nature has forced the match up between the Patriots and Bears back a bit.
Due to the ice storm that hit Kentucky on Friday morning, the University of Pikeville’s doubleheader at the University of Cumberlands will begin two hours later. The women’s game will tip off at 4 p.m., while the men will tip off at 6.
The Bears have been forced to spend an extra night in Lebanon, TN after their contests on Thursday night against Cumberland University. A heavy layer of ice fell in the London area Friday morning, which is where the Bears were scheduled to stay on Friday night. The group will now make the three-plus hour drive on Saturday morning and asked for the delay to assist in the travel time.
“The relationship between Pikeville and Cumberlands has always been strong, and we appreciate Randy Vernon, the director of athletics, and his staff for their cooperation,” said Rick Bentley, Sports Information Director and Assistant Athletics Director, who made the request Friday afternoon. “The safety of our student-athletes is and will remain of paramount importance to us, and Coach Vernon and his staff completely concurred.”
The men’s game will feature two Top 25 teams as Pikeville (18-2, 9-2 MSC) will bring in the #3 team in the NAIA while the Patriots (16-5, 7-4 MSC) will come in at #25, bouncing back on Thursday night off a 4 game losing streak with a win over UVa-Wise.
