No. 9 UPIKE rips nets and rolls past Shawnee

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Ninth-ranked University of Pikeville blistered the nets for 59.7 percent shooting and knocked off Shawnee State University 90-71 Thursday night at the East Kentucky Expo Center.

Six Pikeville players reached double figures in the game and the home team was credited with 27 assists in the win.

Pikeville (10-1 overall, 3-1 in the Mid-South Conference) trailed early after Shawnee State opened up with the first five points. It led 11-7 after freshman Nick Gouch scored on a layup. He had eight of his team’s points at that juncture with 13:32 to play.

From there, though, UPIKE scored 13 unanswered points. Senior guard Chris Johnson had five in the stretch while senior guard Trevor Setty added four, and when senior guard Jamar Briscoe flipped in a layup with 9:37 left to give him 12 early markers, Pikeville’s lead was 20-11.

Pikeville led by 24 twice in the second half before settling for the 19 point margin.

Junior guard Darnell Tubbs paced all scorers with 19 points, leading the bench to 29 in the contest.

The other five double-figures were starters. Setty flipped in 16 while Johnson and Briscoe had a dozen each. Senior forward Terrance Saintil added 11 while junior guard Josh Whitaker flipped in 10.

Johnson added seven assists for the home team while Whitaker and Tubbs tossed out four each.

Junior Brandon Greene came off the bench for 10 rebounds and the nation’s leading shot-blocker had two in only 15 minutes of action.

Shawnee State (4-3, 2-1) had one player score double figures as senior Tyler Morgan scored 14 while pulling down 12 rebounds.

The guests had 10 players score and 15 see action in the loss. They sank all 10 of their free throw shots in the game.

Pikeville will remain home on Saturday when it hosts Rio Grande at 4 p.m. Shawnee State will head across the state line to visit U.Va.-Wise at 4 p.m. Saturday.
