WILLIAMSBURG Ky. - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men’s Basketball team hit the road for their final test of the regular season on Monday as they took on Cumberland University in a tough, hard fought match up. In the end, it was the Patriots who overcame the disadvantage on the boards to come away with a 75-72 victory over the Bulldogs.
The first half was back and forth for a majority of the time as the Patriots did carry a 35-34 lead into the break. The defensive prowess of the Patriots matched with solid shooting from the three point line kept UC in the game, while clutch free throws in the final minutes secured a 75-72 victory.
Senior Benito Santiago, Jr. (Coamo, Puerto Rico) was stellar in the game going 11-19 from the field for 28 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, and 4 steals. Fellow senior Antonio Bumpus (Columbus, OH) added 15 points and 5 rebounds on the game. Point guard Ernie McCoy (Columbus, OH) also pitched in 14 points off the bench.
The Patriots finished out the regular season with a 19-11 overall record and 10-10 in Mid-South Conference (MSC) play which was good to give them a #6 seed in the MSC Tournament. They will travel to Frankfort, KY on Friday to take on the #3 seeded Tigers of Georgetown College with tipoff set for 8:00 pm.
