Bluefield, Va. - UVa-Wise was assessed a technical foul prior to the start of Thursday night’s game for dunking in pre-game warm-ups. That was about the only thing that went wrong for the Cavaliers as the team posted an 82-72 victory over Bluefield College in the first Mid-South game of 2013.
Junior Deon Boyce was as advertised as the former Junior College All-American scored 14 points and grabbed 24 rebounds in his UVa-Wise debut. In addition, Javon Moore scored a team-high 21 points while Matt Day, 14 points, Darius Smith, 14 points, and James Turner, ten points also finished in double figure scoring for the Cavs.
As a team, UVa-Wise dominated Bluefield on the glass by out-rebounding the Rams 52-26. Byron Carpenter scored a game-high 25 points and Kearston Marion added 24 in the loss.
With the win, UVa-Wise improves its record to 6-5 overall and 2-4 in Mid-South play.
The Cavs will return to action next Thursday when the team entertains Cumberland, Tenn. for an 8:00 p.m. tip.
