Samantha Smith named Railsplitter of the week

HARROGATE, TN -- Freshman pitcher Samantha Smith has been named the Railsplitter of the Week for the week ending on February 24th, the Lincoln Memorial University athletic department announced Monday morning.

Smith, a 6'0" right-handed pitcher out of Knoxville, Tennessee, earned this distinction after leading the LMU softball team to a 5-1 mark this past week with five wins on the mound. Samantha opened the week by pacing the Lady Railsplitters to 10-0 and 8-2 wins over Milligan College, as she combined for eight and two-thirds innings pitched in those two outings, surrendering only five hits combined and no earned runs. She also fanned 10 batters in the two games which led to a pair of victories on the rubber for the frosh.

Over the weekend, Smith sparked the Lady Railsplitters with three wins in four games at the Bellarmine Classic in Louisville, Kentucky. On Saturday, she put in seven innings of work, allowing only one run and striking out four to spearhead a 2-1 victory over Ashland University. Her best outing of the week came in the opener on Sunday morning, as she tossed 10 innings, allowing only two earned runs while striking out 11 in the Lady Railsplitters' 5-4 win over Ashland in 10 innings. She kept her momentum rolling with another complete-game performance in the finale of the week, as she fanned four batters and only allowed four hits in the Lady Railsplitters' 4-1 win over Bellarmine.

All told, Smith finished the week with 32.2 innings of work with only three earned runs allowed over that span. She recorded 29 strikeouts over that 32.2 innings span, while lowering her earned run average from 3.86 to 2.25. For the season, she improved her record to 7-4.

The Lady Railsplitters have won 10 of their last 12 games to move to 12-8 on the season. They will look to continue their steady play with seven games on tap this week. They are set to travel to King College on Tuesday, February 26th for a two-game set with the Tornado before heading to Duncan, South Carolina for the Mid-South Classic over the weekend.
