WISE, Va. -- The UVa-Wise women’s basketball team completed a season sweep over visiting University of Pikeville with a 71-66 win at the Prior Center on Monday.
The victorious Cavaliers (5-1) closed the game on a 14-2 run to overcome a 63-57 deficit with 4:42 to play. The game-winning run was fueled by three consecutive made free throws by Taylor Sandidge. Sandige was fouled on a shot and was awarded two more free throws when University of Pikeville (2-5) Head Coach Joanna Bernabei-McNamee was whistled for a technical foul. With making three of the four foul shots, UVa-Wise extended its lead to 69-63.
The Cavs added another bucket on an inbounds pass from Kenzie Poindexter to Reynesha Archer that would go the length of the floor for the team’s final two points of the game. The Bears received a 3-pointer from Patrice Tonge with 42 seconds to go for their final points and the final score of 71-66.
In total, four players scored in double figures for UVa-Wise led by the trio of Archer, Katie Jo Lester, and Sandidge who all scored 15 points. Makenzie Cluesman added 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists for the host. The Cavs’ defense also did a fine job in limiting the Mid-South Conference’s leading scorer Callisha Johnson to eight points on 2-10 shooting.
UPike was led in scoring by Cheyenne Madden and Jayme Jackson who each scored 12 points. The Bears were also strong at the charity stripe connecting on 10-13 attempts. The loss was the fourth consecutive for UPike at the Prior Center. The win keeps UVa-Wise undefeated against UPike in the building.
The Cavs will return to play on Thursday when the team returns to Mountain East action with a trip to West Virginia Wesleyan. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm and you can hear the action live on www.uvawisecavs.com/showcase
