Union, Concordia split twin bill; Bulldogs win series

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union baseball split a doubleheader with visiting Concordia (Mich.), losing Sunday's opener 6-1 and winning the finale 9-2.

The Bulldogs took three of four games to win the series and up their record to 7-5 on the year. Concordia is 1-3 overall.

Tyler Brake (Burlington, Ky.) led Union offensively in going 3-for-6 with two runs scored and a RBI.

Both teams collected a total of 14 hits apiece.

Errors plagued Union all day as the host committed seven on the day.

Game 1 - Turning Point
Union drew first blood with a run in the first inning, but the Bulldog offense dried up after that. Concordia took advantage of an error in the second in putting two runs on the board, but the Cardinals seized control of the game with a four-run sixth. During the rally, Union committed two more errors and Jeremy Robinson delivered a key two-run single to up Concordia's lead to 5-1. Chandler Sidwell scored the final run of the inning when he stole home while Robinson got caught in a rundown in getting picked off first.

Nelson Price (Burkesville, Ky.) took the loss for Union, while Garrett Keeler collected the win. Justin Thompson picked up the save for the Cardinals.

Game 2 - Turning Point
A pair of four-run innings gave the Bulldogs more than enough runs to record the 9-2 victory. Tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the second, Union started off the frame with five consecutive hits to kick off the outburst. LaVance Anderson (Bowling Green, Ky.), Brake and Price each had RBI hits, while Jared Tomany (Bryant, Wis.) scored on a Concordia error.

After the Cardinals scored a run in the top of the fourth, the Bulldogs tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the inning. Union scored the runs with only one hit as Concordia walked two batters and committed an error. Miguel Mendez (Lansing, Mich.) lined a two-run triple and then scored on a Zach Dillman (Cincinnati, Ohio) sac fly to make it 9-2.

Justin Smith (Manchester, Ky.) recorded the win, tossing 1 1/3 innings in relief, giving up no runs on no hits and one walk with a strikeout. Tyler Steele took the loss for Cardinals.
