BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union head coach Tommy Reid recently announced the 2013 Bulldog football schedule, which features six home dates and 11 contests overall.
The Bulldogs will play nine games against Mid-South Conference opponents with six coming against MSC East rivals. The two non-conference dates are against Webber International (Fla.) and UVa-Wise, which is now transitioning to NCAA Division II.
With UVa-Wise leaving the NAIA and the Mid-South, the divisions were reshuffled once again. Bluefield (Va.) and Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) move over to the MSC East, joining Union, Cumberlands (Ky.), Georgetown (Ky.), Kentucky Christian and Pikeville (Ky.) in the seven-team division. The MSC West now consists of Belhaven (Miss.), Bethel (Tenn.), Campbellsville (Ky.), Cumberland (Tenn.), Faulkner (Ala.) and MSC-newcomer Reinhardt (Ga.).
Union will open the season on Aug. 31 at Cumberlands at 1:30 p.m. Not only is this a MSC East showdown, it is also the Battle for the Brass Lantern. The Bulldogs will look to bring the Lantern back to Barbourville after the Patriots reclaimed the traveling trophy last season.
After an open week, Union will play back-to-back home games with Faulkner coming to Burch/Nau Field on Sept. 14 and Webber International on Sept. 21. The Bulldogs will a 6 p.m. contest on Sept. 28 at UVa-Wise before returning home on Oct. 5 to play host to Reinhardt.
The next two weeks will be spent on the road as Union visits Cumberland on Oct. 12 and Bluefield on Oct. 19. The Bulldogs will then enjoy a three-game home stand with Kentucky Christian (Oct. 26), Lindsey Wilson (Nov. 2) and Georgetown (Nov. 9) visiting Barbourville. Union closes out the regular season on Nov. 16 at Pikeville.
The Bulldogs went 4-7 overall and 1-4 in MSC East play in 2012.
