Several schools across Kentucky were closed Monday to give students a chance to recover from flu-like illnesses. Flu season is in full swing and Kentucky isn't the only state suffering.

The Centers for Disease Control show neighboring Virginia is actually in worse shape with widespread reports of the flu. Meanwhile, West Virginia is not as bad with just sporadic reports of flu. Doctors in at least one part of Eastern Kentucky say they're seeing more and more cases.

Doctor's were busy in Corbin Monday where schools were closed and waiting rooms were full of sick people.

Joshua Thomas says he got a nasty fever overnight.

"I had a temperature of 104.5," he said.

And that wasn't the only symptom that came on fast.

"It all started yesterday. Woke up with a headache, my throat felt like strep throat," he said.

Doctors in the Corbin area say in the past few days, they've seen a spike in flu cases and other sicknesses.

"We've been very busy for the last few days," said Physicians Assistant Joe Shelton.

Chairs were empty at Corbin Elementary with many kids out sick. Corbin school officials decided to call off school Monday to let kids get well.

"With the school's shutting down, that helps. That gets them all away from each other," Shelton said.

Doctors say to avoid eating or drinking after others and wash your hands frequently to avoid getting sick.

For Joshua Thomas, the doctor says he has the flu so now it's some medication.

"Told me to stay in the bed all day today and tomorrow until I feel better," Thomas said.

Doctors also say once the flu and other sicknesses spike like this, they can be spread around for several weeks, one reason why some schools are trying to call off school to help the situation. Doctor's say it's never to late to get a flu shot.

Several school systems have already decided to shut down for Tuesday. Wayne County Schools, Knox County Headstart, Wabaco Christian Academy and Corbin Daycare will not be in session on Tuesday. Corbin Daycare is also closed Wednesday.
