Many Tennessee residents say they're buying cigarettes in Kentucky these days thanks to a much higher Tennessee tax. Tennessee officials say if you're crossing the border with too many, you could be breaking the law.

The Tennessee cigarette tax more than tripled in July to over sixty cents a pack, much more than Kentucky's tax of thirty cents. Since then, Tennessee revenue officials say they suspect people are illegally smuggling cigarettes.

The owner of Mike's Seven Eleven in Middlesboro says business has increased since Tennessee's cigarette tax went up.

"People in Tennessee are buying their tobacco over here and you can't blame them," said Bill Wilcox.

Wilcox says even though business is booming, he worries about his customers.

"I'm not going to stop them. They can take their chances, but I'm afraid it's going to get some of them," Wilcox said.

One of his customers is Kathleen Hall who lives about 20 minutes away in New Tazewell Tennessee. She says it's not unusual for her to buy two to three cartons, but Tennessee Revenue officials say buying over two cartons and taking them across state lines is illegal.

Tennessee revenue officials say they're not trying to target just your average smoker.

"We're really not going after your average citizen saving money on cigarettes. We're going after people who are trying to smuggle and sell," said Sophie Moery with the Tennessee Department of Revenue.

Tennessee revenue officials say driving more than two cartons over the state line is considered a misdemeanor while taking more than 25 cartons is a felony offense.

Little by little our rights are being taken away. If we want to kill ourselves smoking, it should be our business. If they want to make people quit, make tobacco illegal, but guess what? that sure won't happen because they get way to much money taxing us to death on it. And now all the new taxes on tobacco are supposed to go to help finance health insurance coverage for poor children and families...YEAH RIGHT!! Same as the lottery was supposed to go to the education system!! Funny that...don't you get tired of people insulting your intelligence? I sure do...I may be stupid for smoking in the first place, but that was my choice, it was not pushed upon me or rammed down my throat. I made the choice and I should be given the choice to quit when and if I want. Any fool knows how bad smoking is, but someone who has never been addicted to tobacco, has NO IDEA WHATSOEVER how hard it is to quit! When they start banning smoking outside (football games)..what's next?

I just can't wait until they decide that the caffine and additives in Pepsi are bad for you, when they raise the price of Pepsi and add a high tax, maybe think about banning it for people under 18 because of the damage it does to younger people's kidneys. Man, I'll be right there at the courthouse yelling, BAN IT, BAN IT, IT RUINS YOUR KIDNEYS, IT HYPES OUR KIDS UP, THAT'S WHY WE HAVE SO MANY DISCIPLINE PROBLEMS IN SCHOOL......FOLKS WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND!!!!

I think this is really stupid . People like me that work a public job for min. wage can not aford 4.00 a pack . I don't see what is wrong with trying to find and buy them cheaper .
