They say she always made them laugh and they can't believe she's gone. Those friends are talking about 12 year old Courtney Gross. Tennessee hospital officials tell us she passed away Thursday morning, two days after an accident on an off-road motorcycle.

No matter who we spoke with, they all said the same thing. 12 year old Courtney Gross had this natural ability to make anyone smile. Now her friends and entire community is in mourning.

She was just 12 years old and taken from the world so unexpectedly. Now her friends remember the girl that always had a smile to spare.

"If she seen that you was like sad, then she would always try to make you smile, make you feel better," said Tiffany Little.

"She always made people laugh all the time and she was really energetic," said Courtney Creech.

Monday night, Courtney Gross was riding an off-road motorcycle near the intersection on Highway 550 in Hazard. Police say her bike collided with a car. She was later air-lifted to a hospital in Tennessee.

"Just a student that always had a smile. When you couldn't put one on, she would put one on for you," said Pastor Mike Smith.

But spreading smiles wasn't Courtney's only talent.

"She plays the guitar, and every time I see a guitar, I'll probably think of her. She was really good at it," said Valerie Eversole.

"She was telling me how much she had learned about the guitar and a particular song that she had learned to play, Stairway to Heaven," Smith said.

Courtney was a student at Dennis Wooten Elementary in Hazard. Her friends say she will be dearly missed.

The family has not made funeral arrangements at this time.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends at this difficult time. However I have to say, I am ashamed at the people that want to come on here and bash, or judge. The parents have enough to deal with and I am sure they have thought of the things you speak before you even speak them, Leave them alone and let them grieve! Noone is perfect!

It was an accident and God must have needed her help in heaven as it seems she was so much of a help here on earth. He had a bigger plan for her and with a helmet or not on a kid's toy or a grown up toy or not if it was her time to go home and be with her Lord it was her time! I can't believe at a time like this that anyone would start on the family and want them prosecuted... Isn't seeing their child lying dead enough! **edited**

This death should be an example of how problamatic ATV's have become. I feel for her family but my most sincere feelings are with the man or woman who ran over this young girl, who was illegally operating an ATV on a state highway without wearing a safety helment. Nothing will ever be said or done about the fact that this girl was doing something that she sould not have been doing in the first place and if the driver happened to have been impared he or she will be put in jail for murder. Does anyone else see something wrong with the way law enforcement is ignoring this problem? Most time if you report an ATV on the road the police do not even respond.

I feel so sorry for the family, but have to say that at some point we as parents need to make better choices for our children. We are all guilty of giving in to their wants instead of protecting their needs and number one being safety. Lawmakers need to stop the making of so many deadly toys and children need to be kept off adult toys.

I've read elsewhere that this child was not wearing a helmet either. I know that her parents must be in a terrible state of grief but it is time for our state officials to step it up and start charging parents with neglect in cases like these. This was a preventable death.

My prayers are for the family of the child, also for the driver of the car, this will be a heavy burden for him to carry. everything happens for a reason, even though we often wonder why, it's all part of gods plan.

I moved here in August and I find myself every day going to the computer to watch news from home instead of watching the news here. I miss home so much and this is the only link I have to the mountains each day. Thank God for all of you....
